INTRODUCTION

Glaucoma is one of the most common eye diseases affecting millions of people. It is characterized by degeneration of the optic nerve leading to gradual and irreversible vision loss. Usually, fluid (aqueous humor) in the eye flows freely through the anterior chamber and exits through the drainage system (trabecular meshwork). The fluid is produced and drained from the eye forming the so-called intraocular pressure. When the aqueous humor cannot drain properly from the eye, the pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) builds. The increased pressure leads to degeneration of the optic nerve with gradual loss of vision. Oxidative stress is a key factor in the onset and progression of optic nerve degeneration.
